We can enjoy the Anton Pieck Parade on December 13th. For one day, a historic part of Haarlem is going back in time. On the Grote Markt and the streets behind the cathedral “Grote Bravo” you will experience the revival of the early 1900s. It will be buzzing with a lot of festive activities, 19th century figures and old time crafts.

Who was Anton Pieck?

Anton Franciscus Pieck (Den Helder, 19 April 1895 – Overveen, 24 November 1987) was a Dutch painter, artist and graphic artist. His works are noted for their nostalgic or fairy tale-like character and are widely popular, appearing regularly on cards and calendars.

From 1952 to 1974, Pieck was responsible for designing almost everything for fairy tale park Efteling in Kaatsheuvel, now one of the major theme parks in Europe. His work for “De Efteling” has been of huge importance for the future of the park, since almost all later designers used his graphic characteristics in their designs (such as materials, colors and shapes). Vivian Maier, Street Photographer is a retrospective exhibition featuring the work of a female street photographer whose impressive oeuvre was only discovered at the end of her life – and then immediately caused a worldwide sensation. Vivian Maier (New York, 1926 – 2009) worked as a professional nanny throughout her life. In her free time, she documented life in large American cities such as New York and Chicago, although no one in her immediate circle ever saw the results. She left behind an imposing body of work, consisting of 150,000 negatives.

For more information about this event, exhibited at Foam, until 28 january 2015 go and see this website about Vivian Maier.

Whenever I visit Amsterdam, the ongoing street scenes, always capture my attention. The feeling of relaxation, the eccentric people walking around, the hobos on the corner hanging out next to the street kids, the busy people who are always in a compulsive rush to get nowhere. But, in saying that, it does make for interesting street photography!
